THE WORLD CUP

What an unbelievable night and spectacle it was. I've never been in a bar so packed and so outnumbered at the same time. Wearing the Aussie colours we made our way to the bar at 6pm, match starting at 10 in order to get a good seat. The champ had invited an aussie mate of his from Tokyo so that kinda upped our numbers by a huge 20%. When the match finally began there was about 70 Japanese and 5 of us. Incessant song and chanting was inevitable, but the first half was something to be heard to be believed. In small pockets of "silence", we could chant the Australian Oi, Oi, Oi, to be quickly overpowered by the "Nihon" chant. I felt Australia had many more chances in the first half although we didnt score, but when the Japanese scored the place went ballistic. Heads down we looked towards the second half.
With 10 minutes to go I was thinking the match was Japans.........and then it happened. Three goals in the last 8 minutes and the place errupted with aussie song and chant. Five people screaming and 70 Japanese silent. In just about any other country in the world we'd be dead, but not here so we made the most of it. After the game we ran outside and down the main street with a huge Aussie flag. Once again in any other country that'd be a potential life threatening situation, but not here. We celebrated well into the night and I have to say that after that, the Japanese must be some of the most tolerant and accepting people in the world. Some people even shook our hands after the game!
